Clean BBQ sauce recipe made from scratch so you don’t have to worry about the unhealthy ingredients in store bought sauces at your next barbecue.
This summer is already off to a good start, and what better way to kick it off than a three-day weekend full of BBQ fun. Me, I’ll be finishing a marathon painting/ home improvement/ gardening project I started earlier this week, but for the rest of you, BBQing is probably on the agenda. Why I chose to do all three projects at once, I will never know.
I’ll try to post some pics to Instagram at some point. You know, so that you can take a break from your celebrations to feel my pain.
For those of you smarter than myself, that will be eating good food, hanging with friends, and enjoying yourselves, this post is for you. For those of you that are in the Get sh*t done mode that I am, go for the carrot recipe I shared earlier this week. Or give these patriotic strawberries a go.
My husband used to be the resident griller at our house, but I’ve been stepping up to the plate more often these last few years. Especially now that we have a smoker that can be started with the push of a button. Now that’s my kind of BBQ’in.
I’ve only made my own clean bbq sauce recipe once and was surprised at how simple it really is. Its not in a state to be shared yet, but should be ready to rock later this summer.
Basically, you plunk a few things into a pot and simmer away, stirring here and there. There’s something about making your own sauce that will fool people into thinking your a jedi master of the grill though. Given this, don’t go spreading the word around about how simple it is. Don’t blow our cover.
As far as others are concerned, making your own sauce is a biiiig deal and takes hours of slaving away. *wink wink
From my own search, I know it can be hard to find a good recipe that isn’t loaded with sugar and other crap. My take on it is that if you’re going to all the trouble to make your own BBQ sauce, why oh why would you tarnish it with white sugar and chemicals? Keep it pure and simple baby, just the way your body likes it.
Luckily, I was able to find not just one clean BBQ sauce recipe, but five that fit the bill.! Without further ado, I’ll share them with you and let you get on with your weekend.

Ok, literally this morning I was at the grocery store looking for some BBQ sauce for dinner. Every single bottle was filled with corn syrup, waaaay too much sugar and nasty preservatives. I ended up not buying any of them cause I was so disgusted by the ingredient lists. I just popped over to check out your site and this post was the first thing I saw. Can you say coincidence?! Tears of joy right now! XOXO
Glad I’m not the only one! I can’t wait to experiment with some BBQ sauce recipes this summer and ditch the bottled stuff once and for all. 🙂
I agree 100%. Why eat all that crap?! I almost had a heart attack when I read Baby Ray’s ingredients and nutritional info. Thank you for including my recipe. I recently tested a new BBQ sauce with pineapple – was super awesome. Will post in a few weeks. And grill is not as scary as I thought it is. My husband usually does it but I have been stepping up just like you because blogging LOL.
I know, I loved Baby Rays! Reading the ingredients was a minor tragedy. I cant wait to try your new pineapple one! I bet it will be awesome on chicken.
